  1. What’s the difference between PeopleSoft, SAP, Oracle and Siebel and Microsoft?

PeopleSoft, SAP and Oracle are the biggest 3 ERP vendors. They make Enterprise Resource Planning software. They also have a lot of larger customers as opposed to some of the smaller vendors. Siebel is primarily a software company that makes CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software. They have a lot of mid market clients as well as a few large ones. Microsoft…well, Microsoft are kinda in the ERP market with their Great Plains software but we are yet to figure out how much market share they plan to grab.

  1. Why is PeopleSoft software so special in your opinion.

This is an interesting question. Well, one of the reasons is…because it’s cool. PeopleSoft products continue to be very creative and innovative. They also tend to make simpler and more intuitive products. SAP is harder to learn and use while Oracle products are widely considered to be more buggy. PeopleSoft have really revolutionized ERP software with the introduction of their PIA (PeopleSoft Internet Architecture). This enabled their applications to be rolled out with no client footprint at all. The PeopleSoft community is actually a pretty small community where it feels like we all kinda know each other. Bottom line, it’s a fun community.

  1. Why did you guys build this site?

We built this site because we wanted to create a community where PeopleSoft employees, clients, contractors, consultants and even just the curious general public could come and learn about PeopleSoft. We are a bunch of workers in the PeopleSoft field and we love the product!

  1. How do you guys feel about the potential merger?

Hmm…well we are cautiously optimistic about the outcome of all this noise. The most important thing is that the spirit of PeopleSoft continues to dominate the company. That spirit is characterized by fun, freedom and continuous innovation. This is/was a fun company!! That’s a lot of the reason why we love the product.

  1. Why is the PeopleSoft skill set in such demand?

Well, relatively speaking, the demand for PeopleSoft expertise has declined substantially but in general, the skill set is still highly regarded and sought after. It is a highly specialized skillset. The free market economy kicks in here. The more complicated and specialized the software product is, the less resources have access to that expertise. That creates a supply and demand issue and the skill set becomes worth more. In addition training is an issue. It’s more difficult (and expensive) to get trained on PeopleSoft or SAP than Microsoft Access or Lotus Notes. Microsoft Access developers or Lotus Notes developers get paid a lower rate than ERP resources because of the perceived complexity of ERP products relative to Notes or Access as well as the difference in the availability of training resources (books, CBT’s etc).

  1. How do I get into PeopleSoft?

There are two ways to do this: 1) By experience: Working at different client sites or companies and 2) By training: Getting trained on a plethora of PeopleSoft products by PeopleSoft professionals. PeopleSoft is starting to provide certifications for user but in our opinion, the horse has already bolted out of the barn. At the end of the day, experience is king. Certifications without experience = probably no employment. If you are just getting out of college and you’d like to get into PeopleSoft, your best hope is to join a consulting firm and try to get on a PeopleSoft project. That way, you can get valuable hands on experience that will get you started. Also, in a firm, they will probably pay for your training (pretty expensive). If you are an IT professional and would like to get into PeopleSoft, the advice above still applies to you but I would add that in your case (depending on the type and amount of IT experience you have), training and certifications may be helpful.
