Oracle buys Octetstring

Software company Oracle yesterday announced two acquisitions: Thor Technologies, a provider of cross-platform provisioning solutions, and Octet String, a provider of virtual directory software. The acquisitions are expected to strengthen Oracle’s portfolio of identity and access management products. Financial details have not been disclosed.

Oracle Identity Management, which serves as the security backbone for Oracle Fusion Middleware, provides organisations with a suite of standards-based identity management technologies. With these new acquisitions, the suite now reportedly includes offerings for access control, identity administration, identity federation, user provisioning, directory services and web services management.

The acquisitions will most directly enhance Oracle’s provisioning and directory capabilities, the company said. Adopting Thor’s Xellerate product, Oracle Xellerate Identity Provisioning reportedly allows organisations to manage user-access rights and privileges through the provisioning lifecycle and across diverse IT environments. Oracle Virtual Directory (formerly Octet String Virtual Directory) enables organisations to connect applications to multiple sources of user identities within an enterprise.

Oracle Xellerate Identity Provisioning and Oracle Virtual Directory will be available by the end of the year.
