Summary:

What is the difference between Service Packs and Maintenance Packs?

Full Article:

An interesting discussion which highlights just how confusing PeopleSoft has managed to make things - talking from an FSC / HRMS standpoint the following is the current situation:

Maintenance Packs are superceded by Service Packs - this is a terminology change only. Aside from Service Packs, fixes may be applied individualy but it is recommended to wait for bundles - bundles are a collection of fixes that can be applied in one go. Service packs are collections of bundles and are cumulative.

Service packs can be applied using the upgrade assistant but there is no requirement to do so - yet.

The other element in all this is the PeopleTools Patch - these are apart from Service Packs which (officially) are for applications only. PeopleTools patches come out as and when bugs are fixed depending on how bad and how embarassing the bug is - often PeopleTools patch X.02 is out before you get a chance to apply X.01 which is nice.
